Explore Market Towns, Sibson Airfield and More in Cambridgeshire

Whether you want to wander around market towns, explore local pubs, or while away the time on a weekend fishing break, Cambridgeshire has something for everyone. River Nene Cottages is based near Peterborough, making us the ideal base from which to explore the local area. From golf to rowing, walking through the countryside, or simply taking in the sunset in a riverside setting, you are sure to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and delicious eateries.  Explore all the local activities that Cambridgeshire has to offer, such as:
  • River Nene Fishing – there is an array of fish to be found in the River Nene, such as Rudd, Barbal, Pike, and more.
  • Golf – the Elton Furz Golf Club is just 6 miles from Peterborough and is great for all handicaps. The clubhouse serves home cooked breakfasts and lunches, as well as a Sunday carvery.
  • Rowing – Thorpe Meadows is a purpose-built rowing lake that is open 7 days a week.
  • Walking – discover the gorgeous countryside along many footpaths and bridleways. You can also hop on and off a bus to explore the surrounding villages.
  • Cycling – the Green Wheel is a series of cycling routes around the city and countryside, ideal for exploration.
  • Sibson Airfield – open 7 days a week for skydivers and home to Peterborough Flying School.
  • Horse Riding – there are several entertaining venues in the area.
  • Talington Lakes – an outdoor activity centre and park with plenty of activities to keep everyone busy.
  • Sailing – hire row boats, pedaloes, kayaks and more at Ferry Meadows. There are also land-based games to enjoy.
  • Rutland Water – the largest reservoir in Europe with tonnes of water sports to enjoy.

Local restaurants worth a visit:
  • The Cafe in Castor - a 30 minute cross-country walk from us.  Also does great breakfasts.
  • The Chubby Castor - new gastro Michelin star restaurant due to open in February 2018.
  • The George Hotel – a smart hotel for formal and casual dining. They do a scrumptious afternoon tea too.
  • The Cosy Club at the Old Delivery Office in Stamford is great for casual meals and breakfasts. 
  • The 8848 Curry House in Stamford – dine on superb Gurkha Nepalese and Indian food.
  • Order in pizzas – our cottages are self-catering, so if you fancy a night by the fireplace, order in a pizza from Village Pizzas. 
Pubs to visit:
  • The Prince of Wales Feathers in Castor – 30 minutes’ walk from the cottages.
  • The Paper Mills in Wansford – great food all the time and lovely for Sunday roasts.
  • The Red Lion, Warmington – for a taste of true traditional home cooking.
  • The Bell Inn in Stilton - our favourite as it's a wonderful traditional pub with good value traditional food and lovely log fires.
